The Powerful Healing of Reiki and Hypnosis for Burnout

Burnout does more than make you feel a little tired. It’s an oppressive cloud of exhaustion, hopelessness, and numbness that makes day-to-day life feel impossible.

Not only does burnout creep up on you, it can take a long time to recover from. Mild cases of burnout often last for months, while more severe cases can endure for years. When left unchecked, it stalls careers, hampers marriages, or makes you lose touch with who you are.

Whether you’re experiencing burnout from a challenging job or a painful period in your life, Reiki and hypnosis can help you start healing. As someone who’s experienced burnout in the past and has helped patients target stubborn burnout symptoms for over ten years, I know firsthand the despair and weariness you’re going through.

Let’s explore Reiki and hypnosis and why they make such a powerful combination for this increasingly common condition.

What is Burnout and Why Does it Happen?

Healing from burnout means understanding where it comes from, why it happens, and what it’s doing to your life. The World Health Organization (or WHO) recently defined burnout as chronic workplace stress that isn’t being managed, resulting in long-term symptoms like exhaustion and cynicism.

However, it’s important to note that burnout can come from other areas of your life, too:

  • Career burnout: long hours impacting physical and mental health, high pressure environments, and a lack of personal fulfillment.
  • Academic burnout: intense study and high-performance expectations
  • Parental burnout: overwhelmed from constant caring and little rest
  • Emotional burnout: prolonged stress in relationships, grief, divorce, or major life transitions

Burnout becomes inevitable when stress, fear, and exhaustion pile up without relief. The good news? You don’t have to stay stuck in the cycle.

What are the 5 Stages of Burnout?

Have you ever reflected on what your life looked like a few years ago and wondered how you got to this point? Burnout is a little scary because of how it seems to come out of nowhere, yet it actually takes a while for it to develop.

While some psychologists and physicians debate the precise number of burnout stages, the following 5 stages are common and apply to most people’s experiences:

  1. A Fear or Stress-Based Foundation: Burnout commonly begins from a fear of not achieving your goals or living up to expectations, causing you to work harder and harder.
  1. Gradual Neglect: As you attempt to work through fear or stress, it’s common to start neglecting your needs, like healthy eating, socializing, or regular sleeping time.
  1. Emotional Changes: Since you’re not meeting your day-to-day needs, you begin to experience mood swings or personality shifts like growing pessimism, isolating from friends, or feeling emotionally disconnected or irritable for no reason.
  1. Unhealthy Coping Mechanisms: As burnout continues to grow and make daily tasks harder than ever, you may develop unhealthy habits to cope. Overworking, emotional eating, and drinking are common coping mechanisms to distract from the pain or numb the stress.
  1. Burnout Sets In: After months or years of too much work, isolation, and unhealthy coping strategies, your body eventually reaches its breaking point. You know you’re burned out when you’re constantly exhausted, feel empty, and despair about your future.

The 5 Most Common Signs of Burnout

If you’re experiencing at least a few of the following symptoms on a daily or weekly basis, you might be burned out:

  • Feeling hopeless about the future.
  • General cynicism or irritability about day-to-day activities.
  • Persistent physical and mental fatigue, even when rested.
  • Physical pains you can’t explain, like headaches or nausea.
  • Feeling unsupported or unrecognized in your work environment, community, or

Now that we’ve painted a clear picture of burnout and its symptoms, let´s talk about how Reiki and hypnosis can help you heal.

What is Reiki?

Reiki is a Japanese technique that helps reduce people’s stress through energy healing, working by removing blocks of stagnant energy caused by trauma, stress, or emotional pain. This name is a combination of the Japanese words ‘rei’ for ‘universal’ and ‘ki’ for ‘spirit’ or ‘feeling’ (depending on how you read kanji).

Also known as ‘chi’ in China and ‘prana’ in India, this therapeutic technique draws upon universal energy to promote a deeper level of healing. Reiki practitioners and masters channel this universal energy through their hands to restore balance throughout the recipient’s body, providing a gentle and non-invasive option to help people recover from symptoms like fatigue, insomnia, and detachment.

By stimulating energy to flow freely, Reiki can reduce symptoms of burnout by providing:

  • Deep relaxation of body and mind: Scientific studies have shown Reiki can reduce stress by activating the body’s parasympathetic nervous system (or your ‘rest and digest’ mode). A 2022 systemic review and study supported Reiki as a promising resource for reducing symptoms of chronic stress, anxiety, and depressive episodes in patients.
  • Relieves physical tension and fatigue: Burnout frequently leaves people knotted up and exhausted from all the pain they’re carrying. A 2018 study analyzed the physical pain caused by stress and anxiety, finding Reiki to be an effective solution for relieving pain.
  • Increase energy levels and sleep quality: While burnout frequently leaves you exhausted, it also makes it hard to rest deeply and recover. A 2022 study on Reiki and sleep quality saw significant improvements in hospital nursing professionals, reducing the amount of time to fall asleep and increasing their sleeping hours.
  • Improve mental and emotional resilience: An important feature of resilience is processing the emotions and stress you experience on a regular basis, lest they turn into anxiety (a common burnout symptom). A 2015 study found evidence that suggests Reiki therapy significantly reduces anxious symptoms, especially when used on a regular basis.

Reiki isn’t the only solution for burnout, however. Hypnosis is also helpful for healing a weary mind and soul.

What is Hypnosis?

Hypnosis, at its most simple, is an altered state of consciousness that enables relaxation and opens up a patient’s mind for healing through positive suggestions. This technique addresses the root causes of burnout by targeting debilitatingly negative thought patterns, releasing emotional blockages, and encouraging healthier coping mechanisms.

Hypnosis with a therapeutic approach is called hypnotherapy and is one of the many solutions I offer to help people recover from burnout. It’s a potent technique for providing:

  • Relief from fear, worry, and anxiety: Since burnout originates from fear or high-pressure environments, a common result is racing thoughts and pervasive worry. A 2019 medical paper found hypnosis to be highly effective in targeting anxious symptoms, with one study revealing a 79% reduction in anxiety symptoms after treatment.
  • Reduced chronic stress: Chronic stress sometimes feels like it’ll never leave, but hypnosis helps the healing process with techniques like progressive relaxation and guided imagery. A 2021 medical report analyzing burnout in physicians saw significant improvement in the three areas of burnout after hypnosis – EE (Emotional Exhaustion), Depersonalization (DP), and PA (Personal Accomplishment).
  • Improved sleep: Not only can Reiki help you finally bring back the sleep schedule burnout took away, but hypnosis helps calm the mind to make rest even easier. A 2018 systematic review revealed a collective 58% of studies showing hypnosis to benefit sleep outcomes, such as sleep disturbance and insomnia.
  • Support for breaking away from unhealthy coping habits (such as overeating or drinking): When you feel trapped by burnout and the new habits you’ve developed to cope, hypnosis can help steer you toward a healthier direction. One study found a compelling link between hypnosis and reducing impulsive eating behaviors.

Recent research has also suggested links between hypnotherapeutic treatment models and reducing symptoms of chronic pain, another issue that can be caused or worsened by burnout.

How Can Reiki and Hypnosis Help People Recover from Burnout?

Just like burnout isn’t caused by a single day or stressor, true healing requires addressing mind, body, and spiritual restoration. Reiki and hypnosis work beautifully together in this context, putting you on the path toward a calm, content, and fulfilling life.

Jakob is just one of many people I’ve helped break free from burnout with the help of Reiki and hypnosis:

“I was struggling with severe burnout when I started working with Marion, and the results have been truly life-changing. One particular session brought such an overwhelming sense of relief that it felt almost like a sudden physical shift—like a reset for my entire system. Since then, I’ve felt completely balanced and back to normal. I’m deeply grateful for the treatments and highly recommend them, especially for anyone dealing with stress, fatigue syndrome, or burnout.”

Reiki is an energy healing tool that addresses the whole being, targeting all parts of the body, emotions, and mind aching from burnout. As Reiki helps you lower stress and strengthen your spiritual connection, hypnosis targets your mindset. Through a relaxed consciousness and positive suggestions, this treatment model paves the way for a life you’re eager to live again.

For over ten years, I’ve provided clients across different career fields and lifestyles the techniques and guidance needed to finally shed burnout’s weight. My well-rounded approach targets major and minor burnout symptoms, empowering you to finally live life on your own terms.
